Before you blame yourself…

I had one of the most meaningful conversations with my daughter this week. It wasn't about school, friends, or sports.

It was about chips.

We try to balance the amount of ultra-processed foods in our house. Not eliminate - simply limit. If you've ever tried to keep cookies or chips in "controlled portions," you know that's not an easy task!

I told her something I wish someone had told me years ago:

It's not your fault that you want more.

These foods are engineered to be hyper-palatable. The perfect combinations of salt, sugar, and fat- it's truly irresistible! These ingredients keep you reaching back into the bag for more. It's not a character flaw when you do- these foods are designed this way!

Many people I coach carry quiet shame about this exact thing. They assume the food noise means:

  • They lack discipline

  • They're weak

  • They just need to "try harder"

A big part of the struggle with these foods is outside of ourselves. Our biology (and psychology) are being hijacked by brilliant design and powerful marketing.

The limits we set in our house around certain foods aren't discipline at our kids.

They're discipline for them.

For their brains.
For their hormones.
For their future relationship with food.
For their ability to hear their body clearly without constant static.

Boundaries aren't punishment, they are protection.

Honoring your body isn't about eliminating joy or labeling food as moral or immoral. It's about understanding what you're up against, and choosing habits and rhythms that support your internal systems instead of overwhelming them.

If you've ever felt ashamed for wanting more... for finishing the entire bag... for feeling out of control around certain foods... maybe it's time to lay down the blame.

You are not broken.

You may just need better strategies, better support, and a foundation rooted in truth instead of shame.

If you're ready to quiet the food noise and build a relationship with food that feels steady and sustainable, I'd love to walk that road with you. Nutrition coaching isn't about stricter rules - it's about clarity, education, and learning how to care for your body without punishing it.

Before you move on with your day, consider this question:

Where have I been calling myself weak, when I might simply need better guardrails and support instead?
