The GLP-1 conversation we actually need…
Unless you live under a rock, (admittedly, I try to sometimes), you're likely hearing conversations everywhere about GLP-1 medications. Unfortunately, most of these messages fall to the extremes - People are either promoting them as miracle solutions… or shaming those who use them.
As someone who has spent years in the health, fitness, and wellness space, I don’t believe either extreme is particularly helpful...
So, here’s my honest take:
GLP-1 medications can absolutely be a useful tool.
For some people, they can reduce food noise, improve adherence, increase motivation, and create enough physical and mental breathing room to finally begin building healthier patterns. That matters.
But there’s also a side of the conversation that deeply concerns me:
Rapid weight loss without adequate nourishment, strength training, and intentional support often leads to the loss of not just body fat… but lean muscle mass and bone density as well.
While scale weight may go down, body composition and long-term metabolic health can quietly worsen underneath the surface. This is particularly important for menopausal and peri-menopausal women, where muscle and bone loss are already accelerated by hormonal changes. Once that tissue is lost, rebuilding it becomes significantly more difficult.
In other words:
Appetite suppression is not the same thing as nourishment.
This is why I believe coaching support can completely change someone’s experience while using these medications. The goal shouldn’t simply be “Eat less to weigh less.”
The goals should be:
preserving muscle
supporting metabolism
improving strength
building repeatable habits
increasing protein and nutrient intake
learning sustainable rhythms for lifelong wellness
The medication may create the opportunity, but habits determine what happens afterward. Without those foundations, many people eventually regain body fat once the medication stops - often with less muscle, lower metabolic health, and more frustration than before.
However, when GLP-1s are used intentionally, alongside education and support, they can become a powerful tool to help someone not only lose weight, but reduce risk for preventable disease and create meaningful long-term change.
As always, my heart's position in this work is not to shame.
There is no shame for using medication.
There is no shame in needing support.
There is no shame in struggling.
My heart is to provide honest education, sustainable strategy, and teach how to care for the body well for the long haul - because it deserves to be cared for.
If you or someone you love is currently using a GLP-1 medication - or considering one - and want guidance on how to support your body through the process with adequate nutrition, strength-focused habits, and sustainable structure, I’d love to help.
