I have a confession…
I really love summer...
and by August, I'm ready for school.
Not because I don’t love my kids… and certainly not because I love a packed calendar and coordinating schedules like an endless game of Tetris… but because I’ve realized something:
Rhythm and routine are actually restful.
Many assume that freedom means no expectations, no schedule… and yet after a few weeks without structure, I end up feeling the opposite. When everything is flexible, nothing is settled. Meals become random. (Do my kids even eat lunch while I’m at work??) Bedtime drifts later and later. Important things seem to get pushed to the back burner because… well… there’s always tomorrow.
In my last blog, I wrote about GLP-1 medications, and how lasting health is rarely about finding the magic tool, it’s about building the right foundations. I think the same is true here.
One of the biggest myths I see in nutrition and fitness is that success comes from motivation.
It rarely does.
It comes from reducing the number of decisions you have to make.
A routine isn't a prison - It's a kindness you extend to your future self.
So much of God's creation runs on rhythms… Morning and evening. Work and rest. The changing seasons. There is something deeply peaceful about living within rhythms instead of constantly reacting to life. Maybe that’s why discipline isn’t always about doing more… Sometimes it’s about deciding less.
Whether it’s meal planning on Sunday, strength training twice a week, or simply getting everyone out the door on time for school, the goal is never the system. The goal is creating enough margin where your healthiest choices become your easiest.
Routines ultimately free us to spend our energy on what matters most.
So before the panic sets in about early mornings and expectations, ask yourself this:
What is one rhythm you could put in place this fall that your future self would thank you for?
Not because you should… but because you’re worthy of being cared for well.
Sometimes finding your rhythm is easier when you don't do it alone - If this season has you thinking about how you'd like to care for yourself a little more intentionally, I'd love to help. Whether it's nutrition coaching, strength training, or working through the mindset pieces that so often get in the way, having support can make all the difference.
